As someone who has not had my own biological children, I had to discover a different relationship to ‘motherhood’. In my art and research, I have been inspired by various archetypal and artistic images of motherhood.

The universal mother is known by many names such as Mother Mary in Christianity, Sophia in Judaism, the Goddess Isis in ancient Egypt and she appears even in the neolithic sculptures of motherhood. Through my art I have rediscovered ‘Mother’ as a safe and nurturing place of love from which all can grow.

Several years ago, I had a particularly strong personal ‘encounter’ with Mother Mary when she appeared in my art. She became a personal patron in times of a difficult fertility journey. Last year I met ‘her’ on my travels through Germany, near the Rhine where Marian tradition is still very strong and her presence is venerated in churches, chapels, monasteries in beautiful paintings, carvings and sculptures.

Madonna del Gran Duque by Raphael

Raphael’s Madonnas are veiled in healing mysteries and just painting their beautiful colours can be beneficial for our emotional wellbeing. This workshop helps to combat feelings of disconnection, isolation and internal loneliness, which arise especially during this time of year. Whilst using the relaxing technique of the wet-on-wet watercolour painting, we can wrap ourselves into the heavenly blue cloak of the universal mother, spreading love over the people across the world.

Looking forward to creating together and seeing your bright and colourful artwork.

Children are welcome under adult supervision. This workshop is more suitable for children 8+.
